Vancouver Island University (VIU) offers two programs in Resource Management and Protection: a two-year technical Diploma in Resource Management Officer Technology and a Bachelor in Natural Resource Protection. Following graduation, students are prepared for work in a field relating to the protection and/or management of wildlife, fisheries and environmental resources, or to pursue post-graduate studies.

Duties:

To instruct and develop curriculum in the Department of Resource Management and Protection.

Courses may include fisheries, wildlife, environmental management and protection, relevant federal and provincial acts and regulations, legal and investigative procedures, court and administrative procedures, firearms familiarization, and a variety of relevant practical field skills such as boat handling

To arrange and supervise student field trips, practica, and various experiential projects.

 

Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning and student success through scholarship and institutional service. Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities outside the classroom, including student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.

Required Qualifications:

Master's degree in a related field from a recognized institution.

Minimum of five (5) years' (60 months) work experience in natural resource law enforcement, including fisheries enforcement. Demonstrated teaching or training experience, with strong oral and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills in a team environment.

The following certificates are also a condition of employment: Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) with non-restricted and restricted firearms, as well as Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP).
 
Must possess a valid Class 4 BC Driver's Licence and have a confirmed satisfactory driving record (as specified in Vancouver Island University policy and procedures).

Preferred Qualifications:

Ph.D. in a related field. Teaching adults at a post-secondary institution. Certification and experience as a firearms instructor. Certification and experience in marine boat operation and safety practices: RHIOT or Marine Emergency Duties 3 (MED A3) and Restricted Operator Marine Radio Certificate. Knowledge and experience with covert operations and leading complex investigations as they relate to natural resources. Knowledge and experience with electronic case file management systems. Occupational First Aid Level 1.
